Baby Skin Absorbs Everything. Here's What Bath Products You Should Actually Be Putting on It.
Disclosure: I only highlight companies and products that align with Empower Palette’s values and/or I personally use. The label says “gentle”. It says “baby”. It has a little duck on it. And it still has synthetic fragrance, parabens, and ingredients you can’t pronounce on skin that absorbs everything.
Your baby deserves non-toxic products at bath time. And so do you. I got you. 😘
QUICK ANSWER
〰️ Baby skin is 30% thinner than adult skin and absorbs topical chemicals at a higher rate. What goes on it matters more than most people realize.
〰️ Common baby bath products can hide synthetic fragrance, parabens, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and artificial dyes.
〰️ The word “gentle” and “baby” on a label are marketing terms and not safety standards. No one checks them.
〰️ Look for: EWG Verified, Leaping Bunny certified, USDA certified organic, fragrance-free (not just “unscented”)
〰️ Clean brands Chelsea’s family actually uses: Pipette Vanilla + Ylang Ylang, Dabble & Dollop, California Baby, Earth Mama, Babo Botanicals
why baby skin is different
Here’s the thing most people don’t know: baby skin isn’t just small adult skin. It’s actually built differently and it absorbs things faster.
Baby skin is about 30% thinner than ours. The skin barrier which is the part that keeps outside stuff from getting in doesn’t fully mature until around age two. That means the first two years of life, your baby’s skin is more absorbent than it will ever be again. Whatever you’re putting on it during bath time is getting in there.
I have four kids under four. I have been through this. I already knew what these companies were on and I immediately went looking for something better.
Don’t feel bad for not knowing. These brands spend a lot of money on packaging that looks trustworthy. The labels do not. Let’s talk about what to look for.
If you’re still pregnant and building your hospital bag, I did a whole post on gentle brands for mamas and sensitive skin that’s a good place to start.
The Ingredients to Watch Out for
You don’t need to become a chemist. Here are the four to know.
🚫 “Synthetic Fragrance / Parfum”
Found in: most conventional baby washes, lotions, wipes
The number one thing to avoid. “Fragrance” is a trade secret. Companies don’t have to tell you what’s in it. It can include phthalates, which are hormone disruptors. If the label says “fragrance” or “parfum” and doesn’t list the source, skip it. Always choose fragrance-free for infants.
🚫 Parabens
Found in: shampoos, lotions, some wipes
Preservatives that mimic estrogen in the body. Look for anything ending in “-paraben” — methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben. Many brands have removed them but some still sneak through. Worth a quick label check every time.
🚫 Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
Found in: some baby shampoos and body washes
Ingredients like quaternium-15 and DMDM hydantoin slowly release formaldehyde (a known carcinogen) over time. They’re cheap and effective preservatives. They still appear in some products marketed specifically for babies. Check for these names specifically.
🚫 Artificial Dyes
Found in: bubble baths, some shampoos, kids’ bath products
The bright colors in some bubble baths and kids’ washes come from synthetic dyes like FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 5, D&C Blue No. 4. Linked to allergic reactions and in some studies to behavioral issues. If the color is beautiful and suspicious, check the label.
One more thing: the FDA doesn’t require pre-market safety testing on cosmetics and personal care products, including baby products. The word “gentle” is not a regulated claim. Nobody checked. You have to check.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR INSTEAD
Here's your cheat code. Instead of reading a 30-ingredient list at Target while your toddler is having a meltdown, look for these on the label:
Dermatologist Tested EWG Verified Leaping Bunny Certified B Corp USDA Certified
And two quick label rules:
Fragrance-free means zero fragrance compounds were added. This is what you want for babies.
Unscented can actually mean a masking fragrance was used to cover the product’s natural smell. Which means there are still undisclosed chemicals in there. Don’t let “unscented” fool you. Fragrance-free is the safer pick.
Short ingredient lists are generally a good sign. If you can read and recognize most of what’s on the label, you’re in the right direction.

FAQs (6 Questions)
-
No — and this one surprises people. The FDA regulates cosmetics including baby products, but it does NOT require pre-market safety testing or approval. Brands self-certify. So the word “gentle” or “baby” on the label is marketing, not a safety standard. Nobody checked before it hit the shelf. You checking right now, by reading this is actually the system working. 😂
-
Start with these: synthetic fragrance or “parfum” (hides hundreds of undisclosed chemicals), parabens (end in “-paraben” on the label), formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin), and artificial dyes (FD&C or D&C numbers). Those four cover the biggest concerns for most baby bath products.
-
Johnson’s has reformulated some products in recent years but some of their baby bath products still contain synthetic fragrance, artificial dyes, and ingredients with EWG hazard ratings. I’d recommend checking the specific product you’re using on EWG’s Skin Deep database (ewg.org/skindeep) — because formulations change and I don’t want to give you outdated info. That way you always have the most current data.
-
It means every ingredient in the product has been reviewed by the Environmental Working Group and meets their strictest standards for safety and transparency, including full disclosure of any fragrance components. It’s the most reliable shortcut I know for clean baby product shopping. If you only look for one thing on the label, make it EWG Verified.
-
Fragrance-free means zero fragrance compounds were added. Nothing. Unscented can actually mean a masking fragrance was used to neutralize the product’s natural smell, which means undisclosed chemicals are still in there. For babies, always go fragrance-free. It's not the same thing and it matters.
-
Newborns only need 2-3 baths a week. Overbathing can strip the natural oils from their delicate skin barrier, which is still developing. Even as toddlers get more active, daily soap isn’t necessary. A rinse with water is enough between soap baths. Less is genuinely more here.
What baby bath product made you do a double take when you finally read the label? Drop it in the comments because I know I'm not the only one who was surprised. 👇🏽
