I want to set the mood for this post with a Vajingle (a vagina jingle)

When it comes to periods, you may have women and men in your life who change the subject.

It is 2018, and they need to get over it. They would not be on this earth if their mothers did not have periods. Sit a pad on your desk. Say you have cramps. Say that you are calling out of work because you are on your period. Talk to your #EmpowerSquad about your differences and similarities. Have a man buy you tampons. Who gives a fuck.

Personally, my period lasts eight days and is very heavy. About once a year, I throw up because of my period. The first through third days are the worst. I no longer hide tampons or pads. I don’t hide the fact I’m on my period. Our bodies are brilliant things that create whole entire humans!

Everyone is different, so embrace your cycle and don’t allow shame to keep the subject taboo.

In the U.S. and globally, millions of women lack access to menstrual products. While I can pay double-digit numbers plus tax on tampons and pads, other women must use toilet paper, skip school, miss work and more.

More on the tampon tax:

Knowing this, I can’t feel shame for my period when I need to stand up for women without access.

The types of menstrual products sold on the market is growing, but this post is focused on tampons and pads without chemicals. More options make it harder to choose. I’m here to share EP’s pick and introduce you to brands you may not know.

BON

The Honey Pot Company

The Honey Pot was born out of one woman's need to naturally heal herself.

Our mission is to educate, support, and provide women around the world with the tools and resources that promote feminine health and wellness. We do this by engaging and empowering the women we serve one healthy honey pot at a time.

Through our functional plant-based feminine care system, our goal is to provide women with a healthy alternative to feminine care that is free of chemicals, parabens, carcinogens, and sulfates.

I was curious what the difference is between the normal versus sensitive products.

Here are some common questions:

What is the difference between the Feminine WASH in Normal versus Sensitive?

The main difference between is the concentration of ingredients. They suggest the Sensitive wash for those with skin sensitivities and for girls ages 4-12 as it is gentle enough for daily use.

What is the difference between the Feminine WIPES in Normal versus Sensitive?

The Sensitive wipes are made without essential oils. Their wipes and washes are 100% paraben, fragrance, and sulfate-free.

What is an Herbal Menstrual Pad?

Herbal menstrual pads are chlorine and pesticide-free cotton pads infused with essential oils and herbs for a soothing experience that protects, nurtures your vagina during your menstrual cycle. Many of the herbs and botanicals used in the herbal pads are also found in The Honey Pot Company feminine washes and wipes.

You can take their quiz to see what products work best for you!

Kali

At Kali, we’re on a mission to empower and educate women about what they are putting in their bodies. We want to band together with the other organic tampon companies in the Tampon Revolution and spread awareness of the benefits of using organic tampons while giving the everyday she-woman a break from running to the store on her period.

Kali doesn’t just automate another annoying task on our to-do list every month. Kali symbolizes a tampon revolution, female empowerment, and education about wellness. Kali girls have a forum to find information, learn about what’s going on in the world of wellness, and be educated about their options and rights as a woman.

- Jonna, CEO

Kali is all about women helping women. For every box sold, Kali is dedicated to donating sanitary products to homeless shelters throughout the US with the help of their Girl Up partnership.

We, as a collective group, need to band together to help women less fortunate than ourselves.

L.

For every L. tampon, pad or liner you purchase, L. provides access to a pad to a girl in need. They support female entrepreneurs in the creation of pads for their communities.

L. works with a network of over 2,800 female entrepreneurs and has distributed over 1 millions health products.

To learn more about their donation of pad making machines to empower female entrepreneurs, visit their movement.

They also sell condoms without chemicals.

Cora

We exist to empower women

From the very beginning, we’ve been dedicated to changing the experience of womanhood—for all women everywhere.

We use the power of business to fight for gender equality and provide products, education, and jobs to girls and women in need in developing nations and right here at home.

Cora gives a supply of pads to a girl in need for every monthly supply you purchase

BON

Their products are made with 100% Certified Organic Cotton and their packaging is biodegradable.

This company is based in New Zealand, so if you are in the US shop here.

If you use light tampons, I recommend you don’t order from BON. Currently, their “light” is best for regular.

BON has partnerships with Women’s Refuge and Nest Consulting.

For every pack bought they donate another to New Zealand charity Women's Refuge.

Women's Refuge supports women in various types of abusive relationships. They offer educational programmes and support services, information and safe housing to women, young people and children experiencing abuse.

Nest provides a holistic programme designed to provide accurate, up to date information for personal development, informed choices and good decision making. It is informative, thought-provoking and empowering, covering aspects of sexuality, fertility, and sexual responsibility.
