4 Highly-Rated & Aluminum-Free Deodorant Brands + My Journey

4 Highly-Rated & Aluminum-Free Deodorant Brands + My Journey

I can’t exactly remember when I made the switch to aluminum-free and cruelty-free deodorant.

I had a major sweating problem. Like I would just be sitting at the computer and get underarm sweat. My stress sweat which was more like anxiety sweat was also a major problem. I’d have to hold my arms down in public. It was so bad and embarrassing!

At this point, I was vegan and realized there must be a way to fix this. So I learned that most mainstream brands are made with aluminum which clogs sweat glands. It is supposed to stop underarm sweat altogether. Obviously, my pits weren’t having it because I was sweating like a psycho.

I’m about to list the aluminum-free and cruelty-free deodorants I tried on my deodorant journey, but I want you to know that this was my personal experience. Many people swear by these brands.

So I made the transition using Kopari’s coconut deodorant. It worked great for me at first. I was sweating less and I smelled great, but then I started smelling my body odor.

So I was onto the next. I picked up Tom’s and Crystal. Both were disappointing. I needed something much stronger.

At this point, I was sweating like a baby psycho. Much less sweat, but I could still smell myself and I felt gross.

So I looked online and found Native! Ughh their deodorant is POWERFUL and they are always coming up with the most delicious smelling scents. Native is super easy to find because they are now stocked in Target! I have stuck with Native for several months now! I do have a little anxiety sweat sometimes, but usually I’m all good.

In this post, I’ve listed 4 HIGHLY reviewed and favored deodorant brands (including Native). I plan on trying all the deodorants on this list.

Over the years, I’ve learned that my body does not like when I use the same products over and over. My body gets complacent and the products don’t work as well. So I have to switch up my shampoos, soaps, etc. I would like to add another deodorant brand to my rotation.

Making the switch to aluminum-free:

When you make the switch, you HAVE to stick it out and let your armpits detox the chemicals. You may smell and feel uncomfortable for a couple weeks, so don’t think it’s not working and switch back to your old deodorant!

What’s the difference between deodorant and  antiperspirant?

Deodorant fights bacteria in the underarm and improves the scent. (Sweat secreted from your underarms glands is odorless, but starts to smell when exposed to bacteria). Antiperspirants clog or shrink sweat glands with ingredients such as aluminum. Antiperspirants stop the body from performing its natural body functions like regulating body temperature, releasing toxins and sweat.

I’ve listed 4 brands below:

1. Piper Wai

  • Women-owned by Sarah Ribner & Jess Edelstein

  • Certified vegan

  • Certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny

  • Gluten-free

  • Made in the USA

  • Read their 5 star reviews here

The star ingredient is activated charcoal because of its invisible, absorbent, pH-balanced shield on your underarms. It neutralizes odor and protects your clothes from perspiration.

It is also great for sensitive skin.

Piper Wai uses a blend of 11 therapeutic-grade essential oils for its signature spa-like scent.

This deodorant comes in a stick, jar or mini jars (perfect for travel)!

Ingredients: tapioca starch, coconut oil, water, shea butter, sodium bicarbonate, rosa centifolia flower water, witch hazel extract, cacao seed butter, tocopheryl acetate, honeysuckle (2 types) flower extract, magnesium hydroxide, activated charcoal, essential oils*: peppermint oil, eucalyptus radiata leaf/stem oil, tangerine leaf oil, bergamot peel oil, clary oil, lemongrass leaf oil, tea tree leaf oil, thyme oil, clove leaf oil, lavender oil, & rosemary leaf oil

*essential oil blend diluted <1% in overall formula

2. type:A

  • Woman-owned by Allison Moss

  • Certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny

  • Recyclable packaging through Terracycle

  • Non-toxic & high-performance deodorant

  • They have 5 star reviews

This deodorant brand is sweat-activated.

How does this work? The patent-pending formula is triggered by moisture (i.e. your sweat) to release a complex of natural active ingredients to protect against odor and wetness. Every time you sweat, type:A works hard to keep you protected.

Their scents are crisp citron (Visionary), white floral (Dreamer), ocean mint (Achiever), and unscented (Minimalist).

Minimalist Ingredients: diisopropyl adipate, glycerin (organic, vegetable derived), dimethicone, beeswax, heptyl undecylenate, sodium bicarbonate, arrowroot powder, sorbitan oleate, corn starch, carnauba wax, triethyl citrate, glyceryl stearate, organic coconut oil, zeolite, tapioca starch, aloe vera leaf extract, zinc citrate, water, bisabolol, titanium dioxide & silver chloride

3. Nuud

  • Cruelty-free & vegan

  • 100% unscented

  • No stains

  • Sugar cane tube & biodegradable cardboard box

  • Sustainable production & CO2 neutral distribution

  • Odor-free for 3 to 7 days with only one application

  • Read their 5 star reviews here

This is made with micro silver (not nanoparticles that can get in skin). Silver is naturally oligodynamic which means that it prevents the growth of bacteria.

 4. Native

  • Cruelty-free & gluten-free

  • Made in the USA

  • Read their 5 star reviews here

Coconut & Vanilla is their best selling scent. Native also sells deodorant geared toward men and teenagers.

I actually buy the travel sample packs (5 small deodorants). There are always new seasonal scents to try! My boyfriend always asks why I have so much deodorant. 😂
